			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<!-- sphereit start --><p>Since we parted at the end of <a href="http://internet-homebusinesses.com/articles/pro-blogger-project-part-3/">lesson two</a>, I&#8217;ve been busy working on traffic building with a combination of comment marketing and blog carnival submissions.  </p>
<p>Submissions to <a href="http://blogcarnival.com/bc/">blog carnivals</a> are actually pretty easy.  If you already have good content on your blog that you want to promote, then it is simply a matter of submitting those posts to the relevant carnivals and waiting for the link back to your blog.  Unfortunately, based on my experience so far, blog carnival submissions alone won&#8217;t do much.  My biggest spike of traffic came when I physically went to each of the blogs that had also submitted their blog posts to the same carnival, read through them and posted comments.</p>
<p>At this juncture, I think I should point out that leaving 10 comments on different blogs or forums is actually a lot more time consuming than it sounds.  If the idea of commenting on other blogs is to draw traffic back to your own blog, then one needs to construct a thoughtful reply that would interest others to click the link back to your blog to find out a little more about who you are.  Therefore, a simple, &#8220;great post!&#8221; or &#8220;I agree with you!&#8221; just won&#8217;t cut it, especially if you are commenting on a popular blog that receives lots of comments.</p>
<p>One great thing about writing into blog carnivals is that it helps you find other blogs and more specifically, other blog posts that are relevant to the topics that you write about.  So rather than searching aimlessly and commenting blindly on random blogs that may or may not be related to the topics you are interested in, blog carnivals help give you a focus.  You don&#8217;t waste time looking for relevant blogs or blog posts.  Clearly, the more specific the carnival, the better.  For instance, a blog carnival about baby humour is clearly more specific than a blog carnival about Family Living which could be about anything and everything under the sun.</p>
<p>I should also add, as I discovered so recently, that leaving &#8220;thoughtful&#8221; (or perhaps I should write &#8220;thought-provoking&#8221;) comments can be a double-edged sword.  The blogosphere is filled with readers with very strong opinions who may and will easily take offense to what you&#8217;ve written, regardless of whether it is intended or purely misconstrued.  Then, there are the readers who will pick fault regardless of how amicably your try to put forth your point of view.</p>
<p>It is inevitable, as you grow your readership, that you will encounter plenty of such individuals.  Finding a way to handle them appropriately will be a bit of a challenge &#8211; one that some of us might shy away from.  Being a rather non-confrontational person, I dislike such frays, even though I do enjoy discussions amounting from a difference of opinion.  What&#8217;s the difference, you may ask.  The difference being that the former may amount to name calling and other methods of verbal abuse, whereas the latter is constructive and educational.</p>
<p>This also leads me to a very interesting concept that I remember reading about in a sports book called The Mind Gym.  Under a chapter entitled &#8220;Permission to Win&#8221;, the author aptly describes an inherent problem faced by many of us who seek the spot light but have not yet had the opportunity to really bask in it for all its glory.  I will use the example described by the author to illustrate the point.</p>
<p>In a golf tournament, there was a player who was not among the top rated players who had emerged out of the blue as a contender for the trophy.  Being a wild card, no one had ever expected him to win.  Quite frankly, I&#8217;m sure, neither did he.  One hole away from the trophy, all that was required of him was a conservative shot &#8211; it was an easy win.  Instead, he hit a bogey and lost the tournament.</p>
<p>What happened?  He hadn&#8217;t given himself permission to win.  He was so used to being the underdog that he wasn&#8217;t prepared for success.  While this might be a sports example, I think the philosophy is relevant in all other aspects of our lives.  In this particular case, it is going from being a regular blogger to a professional blogger.  While we might aspire to become a professional blogger, the mindset of being a professional blogger might not be there.  In other words, we might be unintentionally sabotaging our efforts to become a professional blogger through unwitting actions that detract from our blogs because we are secretly unsure of how to deal with blogger fame.</p>
<p>A simplistic blogging example might be what I described earlier.  I mentioned my dislike of verbal debates amounting to little more than petty name calling.  Although I felt I had posted a carefully drafted comment, another reader had obviously seen fit to make a mockery of my response after misconstruing the true meaning of my comment.  The realisation that to become prominent in the blogging world also means to become a target for such individuals might have led me to retreat to the insular world of my own blog, never to venture out again.</p>
<p>It is our fear of the consequences of success that hold us back from performing at our best.  Until we can overcome that fear and accept the responsibility of success, we will not have the proper mindset to succeed.</p>

<p>Viral marketing is the way to achieve high traffic cheaply and effectively on the web.  Provide your customers with a compelling reason to pass on the message and you are well on your way to big time traffic.</p>

We’ve worked for months putting our business together and our products are what people want to buy.  When it comes to putting together a sales letter we want to explain every little detail so our prospect can see exactly what they’re getting when they make their purchase.  </p>
<p>Isn’t this the way it should be?</p>
<p>NO! The customer doesn’t care about the late nights you spent meticulously researching your product.  The customer wants to know just ONE thing:  What’s In It For Me? (WIIFM)  If you can’t answer that one simple question, you’ll never be able to consistently sell your product or service.</p>
<p>In a sales letter or ad, you have less than two seconds to gain your prospect’s attention.  The first major mistake most people make is to start out with a weak headline.</p>
<p>If your headline doesn’t grab attention, then whatever you say in the body copy is meaningless.</p>
<p>The next biggest mistake is starting any piece of copy with a “me” message.  A “me” message is all about you and your company.  To your prospect “me” messages are boring!  To get your prospects attention you must talk about THEM, not you.  You must talk to their pleasure, their wealth, their challenges, their fears, their problems, and their joys.  Every prospect is tuned into the same radio station – WIIFM (as in “What’s In It For Me”).</p>
<p>One way of avoiding this after you have written your ad or sales copy is to reread it and circle all the “me” words.  Words such as “I, me, we, and our” are “me” words.  Rewrite the copy using “you” and “your” words, making it more interesting and exciting to your prospect.</p>
<p>Imagine how much fun it would be to see your profits go through the roof.  To do this, you must clearly make your business stand out and apart from all your competition.  You must convey your uniqueness without spending a fortune, and the secret is all in the sales copy.</p>
<p>You must create a Unique Selling Proposition (U.S.P.)  What do you offer your prospects that your competitor doesn’t or can’t?  Maybe it’s a better guarantee, better service, availability (reachable after 9 to 5), better location, or better customer treatment.  Whatever you can do to set your business/services apart from your competition gives you the “edge”.</p>
<p>Something many business owners don’t realize or are mistaken about is the “length” of guarantee they offer.  Giving your prospect a “2-Year, No Questions Asked Guarantee” is much better than a “90-day,<br />
Money Back Guarantee.”</p>
<p>The longer the guarantee, the more credible you and your business are “perceived” by your prospect.  Typically the majority of your customers will never make use of the “2-Year Guarantee.”  Let’s face it, by that time they like using your product, and/or they’ve long ago lost the sales slip.  BUT, when a prospect reads about the longer guarantee you’re offering, it raises their comfort level and makes them choose you over your competition.</p>
<p>Always remember that when you’re a small fish in a big pond – you must be different to stand out.  Making use of good advertising copy filled with words that make prospects eager to satisfy their WIIFM is the answer.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<!-- sphereit start --><p>It seems hard to believe that it was in 1994 when we saw the first banner ad online that captured and monopolized our eyeballs.  By the late 1990’s, dot-coms flush with venture capital cash, operated with a “money is no object” attitude and the hype knew no end.</p>
<p>When the dot-com crash hit, it seemed that online advertising was a lost cause. Ad blockers killed the banner ads, and spam killed the e-mail campaigns.  Users tuned out, and it seemed that marketers had killed the golden goose.  But a funny thing has happened between then and now.  Not only has online advertising and marketing endured, but it has emerged as an absolutely crucial part of today’s marketing mix.</p>
<p>Online marketing brings new levels of reach, targeting and accountability, and has moved into the mainstream.  Online advertising has become the solution to marketing problems at a level that other media haven’t been able to do.</p>
<p>The numbers back this up as shown by IAB and PricewaterhouseCoopers September report that online ad spending in the U.S. totaled $2.37 billion in the second quarter, a 42.7% increase over the same quarter last year.  This shows the seventh consecutive quarter of growth, and the market today is growing at more than 20% per year.</p>
<p>Companies are spending at a level that is really pretty interesting.  Consider Ford Motor Co, Tom Green the advertising manager of its truck division just finished a new season of marketing campaigns.  Mr. Green says, “we gave digital as much thought and attention as any other medium.  Look at the numbers,” he says, “80% of people who buy a Ford vehicle go to our Web site first.  Half of all truck customers use online shopping sites. You’d be crazy as a marketer not to take this medium seriously.”</p>
<p>That much attention and spending is the fact that Internet usage is now firmly in the mainstream and broadband usage has grown by leaps and bounds.</p>
<p>According to Forrester Research, 64% of U.S. households are online, with nearly 20% or 23.1 million homes, using broadband.  Nielsen/NetRatings, which measures individual users rather than households, reported that 51% of July users connected to the Internet by broadband vs. 49% by narrowband, an industry first.</p>
<p>Today the Internet is everywhere and when it’s not, people notice and demand that it be even more available.  Online advertising has matured and it enables marketers to “target” consumers in a fine-tuned fashion creating highly personalized user experience.  It’s as effective in getting across a communications and branding message as any other medium.</p>
<p>Online advertising also allows two-way interaction between advertisers and their targets, providing a “real-time” feedback loop that’s invaluable.  A marketer can establish and maintain a two-way dialogue with a consumer online, and no other form of advertising can do this as effectively.</p>
<p>For large advertisers such as Procter &#038; Gamble Co., online lets them interact with groups of consumers more directly than ever before.  This is demonstrated by being able to engage with a million consumer database on a monthly basis through their Club Olay program.</p>
<p>Online advertising supports an almost endless variety of messaging formats, from banner ads and e-mail messages to more elaborate interactive vehicles and microsites.  It‘s the capability to combine the motion and animated visuals of television with close-up and personal interaction.</p>
<p>The results of online advertising campaigns can be measured precisely, making publishers accountable for the promises they make and marketers accountable to management for the success of their programs.  Yet even though online advertising has asserted its strengths, real-world marketers have made online just another medium in their standard marketing mix.</p>
<p>More than anything, what online provides mainstream advertisers is “another point of contact with the consumer” at various stages of the buying cycle. So where is the evolution of online advertising today?  It’s been a crazy 10 years, but marketers say we’re closer to the “beginning” of learning how to take advantage of this new medium.</p>
<p>Online ads will get better targeted, with new concepts opening up new opportunities to marketers.  We should see online ads becoming richer and more evocative, with animation and streaming video.  If history is a guide, there will be ups and downs and the “hype” meter will spike at highs and lows, but the past has set the stage for future growth.</p>
<p>Marketers are on the cusp of a big trend now, made possible by the familiarity and true use of the internet as an advertising medium.  This is the starting point, where the future growth in online advertising is just beginning to come into view.  Where will you go from here?</p>
