There has been a drop in income from Text-Link-Ads which I assume might be due to the current world economic state and many companies reducing their advertising budgets.  But, as Yaro always advised, it is important to diversify your income streams so you don’t end up losing all your income just because one of your income streams have been affected.

Indeed, I think that was the reason for the drop in income during April – a lack of motivation to work harder.  I managed to turn the trend around for May, but we’ll see if we can keep this up in June onwards.

And why not? Did you know that the majority of fatal heart attacks happen at 9 a.m. Monday morning? It’s true. It seems a lot of people would rather die than get back to the old grind after a weekend of freedom.

So when someone offers an opportunity or plan for you to take your job and shove it, yet still make enough money to live and pay all your bills, it sounds blissfully irresistible.

Of course, bliss and reality are always two different things. Is it really possible to run a business from your own home that is more than a hobby or source of part-time income? Can you get rich working out of your own home? Can you really trade your cubical and necktie for blue jeans and the comfort of your own den?

Well, for your information, home-based businesses are one of the fastest growing kinds of enterprises in America today. When you work for someone else, you live a regimented life. Your body may not want to get up at 7 a.m., but you have to be at work by 8 a.m. so you lurch out of bed with a head full of sleep.

People who choose to work at home are doing more than just escaping the yoke of their master; they have made a deep, firm, life-altering decision which says that health, happiness and prosperity depend vitally on the freedom to work for ourselves, and in doing so in the comfort of the home.

We want to really emphasize that fact that to be successful in a work-at-home situation, you have to be nothing less than a fanatic; a zealot, who is utterly committed to making work-at-home not only a successful venture, but a profound commitment for life. You must be convinced that a return to an outside office job would be the equivalent of a spiritual death sentence.

Many people hate their office jobs, but they have made an inner compromise with themselves. They have convinced themselves that their job is “not so bad,” pays the bills, and that they can stick out because they have to.

If you want to be truly successful at quitting your day job, there cannot be any room for such compromises in your soul. You have to take the attitude that to work any longer at your hateful job is akin to fouling your inner being with a spiritual cancer the will sicken and kill you.

2. Eliminating the Home-Office Mentality

To move our work home, however, does not mean we eliminate every single thing about the traditional American office. Rather, we should select what is useful and what is not.

It’s a mistake to quit your job and go home with a “home-office” mentality. By this we mean thinking small, and believing that you will automatically sacrifice a decent income in exchange for your freedom. Please! Do not think small!

To quote Jeffrey Lant again: “Too many home-based practitioners fail to understand the benefits that accrue because of the professional style they have selected. They focus on the “home” part of the business rather than the “business” portion, and as a result are doomed to small incomes.” Working at home provides many benefits. We can save a lot of time because we don’t need to commute and we have more control over our schedule. We can save a lot of costs because we don’t have the overhead requirements of larger businesses. We can cut our stress — and so have more energy — because we avoid many of the characteristic problems of life in the late 20th-Century office. We must work these advantages to our profit.

3. Your International Headquarters

The German philosopher Immanuel Kant said that if you sit at home alone at your empty kitchen table, eventually, the “whole world will come to you.”

Well, today you don’t need the great mind of a philosopher to make the entire world come into your living room. What you need is a phone jack.

We live in a unique time in history. Satellites, fiber optics, the integrated circuit and other communications miracles means that you can be just about anywhere in the developed world and establish communication with anyone.

The telephone, the fax machine, the computer, the modem — all of these are not only affordable by any middle-class citizen; they are the key to eliminating your need to drive a hectic freeway everyday to get to a place of business outside your home.

With these devices at our disposal, we should allow ourselves to “think globally.” Too often, home-based businesses focus on the narrowest market, the neighborhood, the county, the city or state. This is fine if you are providing a local service and are content with a certain moderate level of income. But if you want the big bucks, you should not think small. Also, you should not believe that, just because you are home-based, you cannot compete with the big guys.

The purpose of any business is to seek assess and seek out every possible market for its products and services, to ascertain whether these markets have the ability to buy these products/services, to determine whether there is sufficient profit in these markets to warrant approaching them, and, once positive assessment has been made, to launch a sustained marketing campaign that gets a significant percentage of this market to purchase the product or service in question.

Your home telecommunications machines will not only enable you to do this, but they can also help you overwhelm larger, more cumbersome traditional businesses that are your competition.

As a home-based entrepreneur, you will not have all of the disadvantages of your more traditional competitors: no office rent, equipment or expense; no employees to pay salaries and fringe benefits for; no time wasted on meetings, employee problems, paid sick leave, etc.

All the money your competitors spend on heating the office and buying furniture could better be spent on the actual marketing itself.

As a home-based business, you will be already positioned where the traditional business is currently struggling to move: toward the lowest possible overhead and the greatest possible concentration of dollars on products/service development and product/service marketing.

So, a home-based business takes full advantage of three major goals of modern business success:

(1) Vastly reduced overhead
(2) Easy access to a global market
(3) Full advantage of telecommunications.

To not have the basic telecommunications toys — computer, modem, fax, and telephones is impossibly stupid. Still, even in this day and age, many of people strongly resist the one element that is undoubtedly the heart and brain of any successful home business — the computer. The computer is so important in fact, we have made it a category all itself.

And remember, learning to use a modern computer is easier than learning to drive a car, so you have no excuse not to plunge forward.

4. The Computer

You should pay close attention to what computers can do for you in your plans to escape your job and make your work-at-home dreams come true.

People who want to run a home business usually have a very small staff — in fact, a staff of one — yourself! The rest of your needs are handled by independent contractors, depending on the kind of business you are in and the services you need.

To run a serious, truly global home business, a computer is as necessary as oxygen is to life on earth. Those who try to fool themselves into thinking they will ever make a serious go of their home-based business without a computer are sadly mistaken.

Computers give you two primary advantages:

(1) They enable you to store large amounts of data and to sort by data field so that you can easily get the information you need.

(2) They enable you to develop a pattern document for every situation you’ll ever be in in your business. To run a home-based business successfully, you must anticipate just what situation will emerge and prepare accordingly.

A business is based on a characteristic series of situations and a characteristic set of things that happen — or that do not happen. You must be prepared with the proper document for each situation. Once you have established all the protocols, and have experienced all the situations associated with your kind of business, the time will come when running your business is, in large part, a repetition of certain key tasks. Computers are all about handling repetition swiftly and efficiently.

But the computer is much more. Today, by connecting a computer to the phone line with a modem, your machine becomes more than a data storage system and repetitive task handler. It becomes a multi-task, multi-level communications processing center that connects you to the globe.

Such things as e-mail, on-line services, the Internet, the Web and more can’t help but revolutionize the way business is done. If you do not become a part of it today, you certainly are going to suffer for it greatly in the near future.

If there is an effective way to market products on the Internet or any other on-line venue, no one has truly discovered it yet. The only people making money on Internet marketing are the people who are selling the concept of doing it. If you have a product or a service and expect to reach millions of buyers through computer screens, you are sadly mistaken.

The Internet is definitely where a lot of innovative things are happening. It’s a great place to exchange ideas, find out what hot, what’s not, and stay on the cutting edge whatever your particular business is.

5. Your Business Hours

If you’ve been paying attention to the first four points, you’re well on your way to becoming a successful home-based business owner. Now we don’t want you to blow it by thinking you can keep banker’s hours.

The global market is a 24-hour per day market, and a 365-day per year market. Let the others sleep late on Saturdays and take Sundays off. Those times could be your day to move and corner loads of customers that the others miss.

You should get up earlier and quit work later. You should be open for business on holidays and be available 24-hours a day either personally or through your answering service.

“But wait a minute!” you might be thinking at this point! “I thought that working at home was all about freedom and an end to drudgery. This sounds like nothing but endless work!”

Well, here’s the thing. For most of you who quit your regular jobs to go to work for yourself, you’ll discover something magical. You’ll discover that when you are working for yourself, when you are building your own business, a lot of what you does not seem like work at all.

The great writer Jane Roberts said, “Inspiration is its own motivator.”

Running your own business is all about being inspired 24-hours-a-day. When you stop selling your body and soul to some company or corporation and start giving your energy to yourself, work has a way of turning into inspiration and play.

The perfect work for you is that which you don’t think of as work, yet doing it makes money and provides you with the bread and shelter of life. You’ll see what it’s like if you make a true commitment to being self employed, put all your energy into it, and stick with it for the long run.

Most of these people are making the extra money they need. Some have wisely and carefully built these extra income efforts into full-time, very profitable businesses. Others are just keeping busy, having fun, and enjoying life as never before. The important thing is that they are doing something other than waiting for the government to give them a handout; they are improving their lot in life, and you can do it, too!

The fields of mail order selling, multi-level marketing, and in-home party sales have never been more popular. If any of these kinds of extra income producing ideas appeal to you, then you owe it to yourself to check them out. But these aren’t the only fields of endeavor you can start and operate from home, with little or no investment, and learn as you go.

If you type, you can start a home-based typing service; if you have a truck or have access to a trailer, you can start a clean-up/hauling service. Simply collecting old newspapers from your neighbors can get you started in the paper recycling business. More than a few enterprising housewifes have found success and fortune by starting home and/or apartment cleaning services. If you have a yard full of flowers, you can make good extra money by supplying fresh cut flowers to restaurants and offices in your area on a regular basis. You might turn a ceramics hobby into a lucrative personalized coffee mug business. What I’m saying is that in reality, there’s literally no end to the ways you can start and operate a profitable extra income business from your home.

The first thing you must do, however, is some basic market research. Find out for yourself, first-hand, just how many people there are in your area who are interested in your proposed product or service, and would be “willing to stand in line and pay money for it”. This is known as defining your market and pinpointing your customers. If after checking around, talking about your idea with a whole lot of people over a period of one to three months, you get the idea that these people would be paying customers, your next effort should be directed toward the “detailing” of your business plan.

The more precise and detailed your plan – covering all the bases relating to how you’ll do everything that needs to be done – the easier it’s going to be for you to attain success. Such a plan should show you start-up investment needs, your advertising plan, your production costs and procedure, your sales program, and how your time will be allocated. Too often, enthusiastic and ambitious
entrepreneur jump in on an extra income project and suddenly find that the costs are beyond their abilities, and the time requirements more than they can meet. It pays to lay it all out on paper before you get involved, and the clearer you can “see” everything before you start, the better your chances for success.

Now, assuming you’ve got your market targeted, you know who your customers are going to be and how you’re going to reach them with your product or service. And you have all your costs as well as time requirements itemized. The next step is to set your plan in motion and start making money.

Here is the most important “secret” of all, relating to starting and building a profitable home-based business, so read very carefully. Regardless of what kind of business you start, you must have the capital and the available time to sustain your business through the first six months of operation. Specifically, you must not count on receiving or spending any money coming in from your business on yourself or for your bills during those first six months. All the income from your business during those first six months should be reinvested in your business in order for it to grow and reach your planned
first year potential.

Once you’ve passed that first six months milestone, you can set up a small monthly salary for yourself, and begin enjoying the fruits of your labor. But the first six months of operation for any business are critical, so do not plan to use any of the money you business generates for yourself during that period.

If you’ve got your business plan properly organized, and have implemented the plan, you should at the end of your first year be able to begin thinking about hiring other people to alleviate some of your workload. Remember this: Starting a successful business is not a means towards either a job for yourself or a way to keep busy. It should be regarded as the beginning of an enterprise that will grow and prosper, with you as the top dog. Eventually, you’ll have other people doing all the work for you, even running the entire operation, while you vacation in the Bahamas or Hawaii and collect or receive regular income from your initial efforts.

Although there isn’t really a write or wrong number of blog posts you should write a week, the general rule of thumb is update often to get your readers to return more often, but not so often that they become overwhelmed by the content.  I remember reading on John Chow’s blog that he doesn’t recommended posting more than three new blog posts a day.  Then again, a technology blog that updates snippets on all the latest technology in the market might need to post more frequently than that.  So it all boils back to your blog topic and your readers.

My target is usually one blog post per day.  Sometimes I write less because I have nothing to write about and sometimes more because a lot has been happening.

The Blog Mastermind program focusses on five areas:

It makes sense to work through it in this order because you can’t progress to the next wihtout having done the former.  For instance, you need a blog before you can create content, and you’d be wasting time and effort if you don’t optimise your blog before you start building it up with content.  Without content, there is no point generating traffic because it is content that will keep your readers coming back.  If your readers have nothing of value to read, they won’t come back and the traffic you have created will be wasted.  Without traffic, your monetisation options are limited so there’s really little point in looking at monetisation until you have some traffic to your blog.

The homework from lesson number one of Blog Mastermind is to set up a WordPress blog on your own domain.  Although you can use any other blogging platform, using WordPress offers some great advantages that you don’t have with other blogging platforms.  Likewise, you can also use hosted blogging platforms like blogger but you don’t control the blog and if something were to happen to the blogging platform, you would lose all the work you put into your blog that you built up from scratch.

So point to note – host your own blog and make it a WordPress blog.  I used Bluehost because they offered one click installation for WordPress and they offered one of the best packages I had seen.  The domain came free with my Bluehost subscription and the registration was all done for me.  It doesn’t get easier than this.

I created Babylicious when I first signed up for the Blog Mastermind Program.  Babylicious was originally a free-hosted Blogger blog called Baby’s Diary.  Although Babylicious is now my focus, I still occasionally blog on Baby’s Diary because it contributes to my monthly income.  It might not be much but at this current income level, it is still something I can’t let go of.  Perhaps when Babylicious really takes off, I will phase out Baby’s Diary completely.

I put up my first website a year ago. And I’m
embarrassed to say it’s making less than $100 per
month. Now, I’m writing to you because I’m very
frustrated with my website’s lack of progress. It’s
pathetic. But that’s not the half of it.

You see, my inbox gets flooded with offers every week
from different Internet marketing gurus. Each one
promising me riches. Each one promising to show me how
to make more money online. And in many cases I took

After downloading it, I’ll spend a little time going
through it and then I soon get distracted by something

They say that insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and hoping for different results.  Well, I’m going to change what I’ve been doing and do things a little differently to see if I can improve my results.  To ensure that I’m accountable for my actions, I’ve decided to blog about it here.  Consider this series of blog posts my real life case study if you will and let’s see what I can make out of it in one year’s time.

One of my biggest passions in life is writing.  Out of writing stemmed the passion for blogging.  It has also been my dream to make a living out of something I enjoy doing.  After hearing so many success stories from professional bloggers, I am keen to add my name to the growing list.  If I could make a replacement income out of blogging (I’ll take what I used to earn at my last company as my bench mark – which is approximately USD2k/month not including benefits and bonuses), I’ll officially consider myself a professional blogger.

However, this isn’t going to be just another blog about how to make money online.  This is going to be an account of my own personal journey towards becoming a professional blogger.  Do I currently make money online?  Yes, I do.  Is it a replacement income?  No, it is not.  At least, not by the standards of what I used to earn – $2k/month. 

Taking a leaf out of John Chow’s book, I’m going to blog about how much I’m currently earning from my blogs.  This is purely to serve a benchmark to for me to work against.  I currently have 12 blogs online, most of which are monetised in one way or another.  In combination, they earn me anywhere between $400-600/month (which is probably about how much a fresh graduate can expect to earn locally, although it isn’t an amount I could possibly live off).  The bulk of my income comes from three of my blogs – two which are pretty much automated and one which requires me to write to in order to make money.

Around about August 2007, I signed up for Yaro Starak’s Blog Mastermind Mentorship Program.  Although I had the best intentions to really work at it to achieve the target income of $5k/month, I ended up like Jeff Thompson – I eventually got distracted and didn’t really get very far.  However, what little I did do (and believe me it was very little) was enough to convince me that Yaro’s mentorship program was the real deal because the bulk of what I earn now is all due to the tips I picked up from Yaro’s course.  So if you’ve just started a blog with the intention of monetising it or you have a blog but aren’t making much money, I really recommend signing up for Yaro’s Blog Mastermind Mentorship Program.

Where I went wrong was that I had too many blogs and I wasn’t prepared to let any of them go while I concentrated on making one of them a success.  At the same time, I allowed myself to get sidetracked by the promises of other programs that would help me make money online.

My plan now is to take the best blog that I currently have – Babylicious - and focus on making it my professional blog.

Where most blogs about making money are case studies on blogs about making money (John Chow, for example), the case study you will read about here on Internet Home Businesses Blog is one about making money from a blog about parenting.  I honestly don’t know where this is headed, but stick with me and we’ll find out.

If at anytime there is a job that you are interested in and you are lacking any of the skills for the position do not fear. There are free computer courses provided through local libraries. Take these courses and beef up your computer skills. If needed read up on business skills or advertising techniques or whatever area you are concerned about your knowledge on. There have been many successful Americans throughout history that were self-educated. This is proof that there is nothing standing in your way for home business career success accepts yourself. Put in the time and effort needed to learn about the position you are interested in and go for it. We are only limited in life if we allow ourselves to be.

There are sales positions in which you build a website and offer products or services for a company. You promote the items and may take orders, but the over all process is handled online. The items or services are provided to the customer through another department and are out of your hands. You can even purchase products online at less than wholesale prices and make an incredible profit through resale. This is legal and it works for many people across the nation. This is similar to those who sell items on ebay or other online stores. There have been several books written on how to become wealthy though Internet sales. It’s all a matter of if you enjoy buying, posting and selling of items. Finding your niche or an area of online business that you enjoy is key to long-term success. If you enjoy what you do and it makes you money you are set.

Online business opportunities are available for the taking. It is all a matter of having the confidence to jump in there and grab a hold of that opportunity. In life we are presented with chances to make our lives more pleasant and to increase our own knowledge as well as happiness. Sometimes we feel intimidated and we allow the opportunity to pass us by. We are left wondering what if. Other times we jump in without concern of the consequences because we want it so bad. If you want the opportunity to work from home let it be the chance that you are willing to take because it could lead to a wonderful life experience.
